HG Transportaciones strengthens driver professionalization with a truck driving simulator

Grupo HG Transportaciones has championed driver professionalization for a decade through its institute, now known as Universidad HG — and it just added an APEX simulator to expand the group's training capabilities.

Driving professionalization for freight operators through training is an initiative Grupo HG Transportaciones launched a decade ago through its institute, today known as Universidad HG.

Grupo HG Transportaciones (No. 8 in the Top 100 del Autotransporte®) maintains a focus on constant growth in its operations. It currently runs close to 800 units across its business divisions, which requires developing professionalized human capital, promoting road safety and optimizing the use of resources.

To keep that momentum going, Grupo HG added an APEX simulator that expands training capacity for the group's companies and covers their full range of vehicle configurations — long-haul, local and expedited transport.

In just over 10 years of operation, Universidad HG has graduated more than 900 drivers. Now, with the simulator, the goal is to sustain that momentum across two scenarios: for candidates unfamiliar with the dimensions of the units, enabling a faster immersion, and for experienced drivers, serving as feedback to work on their improvement areas.

This working model is why roughly 85% of Grupo HG's current driver roster are Universidad HG graduates — and in some divisions nearly 100% of the workforce came up through the program.

HG's educational model spans four stages that blend theory, practice and mentoring over three to three-and-a-half months. An optional coaching phase adds three more months to help drivers perfect their craft.

While Universidad HG operates as a training institute, the goal is to develop it into a full university, integrating other disciplines the group needs and contributing to the growth opportunities we have.

The APEX simulator added to HG's training program can recreate diverse weather scenarios and adverse driving conditions to strengthen driver development. At the same time, it covers the group's full range of vehicle configurations — not just Freightliner and International tractor-trailers, but straight trucks and light-duty trucks as well.

APEX has partnered with numerous companies on simulator deployments as a path to driver professionalization — among them Coca-Cola FEMSA, Bimbo, PepsiCo, Solistica, Estafeta, Lala and Soriana — delivering immediate benefits such as accident-rate reductions of up to 70% and fuel-economy gains of at least six percent.
